Stuff, also... Tired
I took over 400 pictures at the Shedd Aquarium. It's the first time I've ever filled my memory stick (and I wanted to take even more). I could have spent several hours in front of just their tetra tank. In related news, we're home now.
Also, very tired.
I will try to get the photos up some time this month. this will depend on my level of busyness and how bad the photos look once I get them on to on my computer.
Comments:Was it also filled with shrieking children? I got the most incredible headache the last time I was there...
It wasn't full of so many loud children, just a heck of a lot of people. It's funny, because other than the odd head sticking in front of a tank and a few reflections, you can't see the crowds at all in my photos. (I took one picture of the upstairs reef exhibit surrounded by people.)Post a Comment
We had to fight to get near the displays every time and we only barely got seats at the dolphin show (by showing up 1/2 hour early). In the future I am definitely not going there on a weekend in the summer.
I would say that the Shedd was a little smaller than the National Aquarium in Baltimore. The main building of the Shedd opened around 1929 (Wikipedia claims 1930, but I think the book on the history of the aquarium that I bought in their gift shop said 1929), so the floor plan is a bit sub-optimal. The art deco decor of the old parts of the building is stunning though. I didn't take nearly enough pictures of it (I missed an awesome octopus lamp, *sigh*).
They have a much nicer marine mammal area though. I don't know when they build that part of the aquarium, but it's much newer. They have a handful of pacific white sided dolphins and several beluga whales. It was neat to see belugas again. (The national aquarium had some for a short period when I was a kid.)
I spent some time yesterday doing an initial pass on editing my photos. I think I started out with about 440 photos and cut it down to 280 by just deleting the most egregiously blurry/ugly ones. Unfortunately more editing will probably follow. I may have to give up and use Gallery or Flicker in the end, because some of the photos need multiple sizes (for the details) and I don't have a good way to do that yet.
