That's a really adorable dress. And very unique -- it doesn't look like the run of the mill Jane Austen costuming.

Did you have to do any other alterations to the bodice of the dress?

Thanks for the complement! ^_^

I was going for a slightly later time frame, just around when the waists started to transistion down for the "Romantic" era. I wanted to have longer sleeves too, but I didn't have time to work that part out.

Unfortunatly I had to do quite a bit of alteration on the Simlicity pattern.

I started out by changing the straight of grain on the front of the vest to be vertical (instead of at a 45 degree angle) on the front. I'm not sure why they seem to think it would be okay to cut the front on the bias and the back on the straight of grain, but I wasn't willing to mess with that.

My first mockup after that fit me perfectly in the shoulders but was too narrow across the chest. So I had a protracted fight with the shoulders and ended up redrafting the bodice with the shoulders shifted further out.

I went through like 5 muslins getting that mostly okay and I ended up taking some out of the side seams and shoulder seams as well as adding about 1.5" to the bottom of the front and back.

I also moved the darts, because they don't go high enough or at the right angle. The original pattern really makes you look like you are trying to go for the Madonna spikey bra look. I think that would be okay if you were wearing the vest open, but as a bodice it just looks silly! ;)

I'm guessing that in the long run I might have been better off getting an existing Regency gown pattern for the bodice, but so far I haven't been terribly impressed with the ones I've seen available. I really like Folkwear's skirt, but they want to do the top all gathered in a way that I'm pretty sure is doomed to failure.

I'm intensely pleased to hear I am not the only person who has fought that Simplicity pattern hand to hand on fit! I think it's a good idea, but I swear it was drafted for only the A cup woman. :-D
